Target Base Weight — what you control

≤ 19.3 lbs

Everything in your pack. Does NOT include worn clothes, food, water, shelter, and crew gear.

Target Max Total

34.0 lbs

Day-1 total at 20% body weight

Absolute Max (Ceiling)

42.5 lbs

Above this you MUST cut weight

Estimated Total Pack Weight

32.7 lbs
ON TARGET19.2% of body weight
1 lb 5 oz under target
9 lbs 13 oz under max

Base 18.0 + 14.7 Gear & Food = 32.7 lbs

Day-1 Gear & Food (Constant)

  • Food (per person, 1st carry segment)5.8 lbs
  • Water (2L standard)4.4 lbs
  • Crew gear (avg, varies 0–3 lbs)2 lbs
  • Shelter (2–3 lbs typical · we plan at 2.5)2.5 lbs
  • Total Gear & Food14.7 lbs

Carried but not inside your pack. If your shelter is lighter than 2.5 lbs, subtract.

Why 20% and not Philmont's 25–30%? The crew target is 20% so we get an experience, not a survival march. 25% is the hard ceiling — above that, you must cut weight before departure.
Gear assignment may need to be uneven. Lighter crew members may need to carry less shared crew gear so their Day-1 total stays under their Absolute Max. Heavier crew members pick up the slack — they have margin. See Reference › Gear › Assignment guide for the body-weight tiers.
